HOW TO BUILD A WALL

Quite a few of your home improvement or remodeling projects are likely to include the building of an interior wall. While it sounds like a king-size job, it's really quite simple if your plan it thoroughly before you begin and consider what the new wall will do to your house.  It is almost certain to alter the light and heat in the room, and it may some wiring, plumbing and heating changes necessary. Plan these points first; then proceed. The wall will be only a partition and therefore, bear on load other than its own weight. As a result, relatively light materials may be use. The framework of the wall consists of a sole plate on the floor, a top plate on the ceiling overheat and studs at regular intervals between them. Use 2-by-3 stock for plates and stud. These will support the "skin," the wall covering on both sides. First secure the sole plate to the floor . If the floor is wood, nail down the plate with 10d nail at 2' intervals. If the floor is concrete, bore at least two or more holes through the plate every 3' and matching holes deep in the concrete, Fiber or metal plugs will hold screws put through the plate. If you plan a doorway, mark its location on the plate. Measure the door width, add 1" on each side for the frame (or jamb) of the door 1.4" on each side for the short studs of the rough doorway framework. Cut out the plate where the door will be located after it has been nailed down, since this makes lining up the sole plates on both sides of the doorway much easier. Don't nail the plate where the doorway will be located or it will be difficult to  remove the section later.
