ASSEMBLING SCREENS

1. First step in assembling metal screens is to cut metal channel with miter cut. Use a hack saw and miter box.
2. Metal frames are joined with locking devices inserted into hollow center of the channel stock.
3. Screening is placed over recess in the channel; a locking rod is inserted and tapped into place with block.
4. Excess material can be quickly removed with a razor blade or a strong pair of household shears.
5. Whether metal or wood, screens are easily hung on standard brackets which also serve for storm sash.
6. For wood screens, construct frames of 1/2" or 1 1/4/ 21/2" stock. Lap joints at corner make a firm joint.
7. A useful jig for cutting lap joints can be made by nailing two scraps of  1/2" lumber to a base and setting the frame pieces between them; the saw cut stops on top of scraps at correct depth.
8. Frame is placed over two horses, the center bowed and screen applied at one end. When secured at the other end and bow is released, screen is taut.
9. Tacks or staples, 1/2" apart, are used to fasten screen. Begin tacking at corners.
10. Whether new or a replacement, the plastic type of cloth screening can be held in place with staples, the edges covered with half-round trim strips brad  into place.
