The addition of a storm door always means more comfort in cold weather through more evenly heated rooms and a reduction drafts. A combination door has another advantage in that the storm sash can be replaced with screens in warm weather. Combination storm doors are available in many in many different sizes and styles. Measure the height and width of the door frame, and buy a door that is and inch or two larger to assure a snug fit after the door has been cut to size.
1. On a new door, the stiles or vertical side pieces often project beyond the top and bottom of the door. Square off projecting ends and saw off excess stiles.
2. Measure width of frame at top, center, and bottom. Mark off measurement on door and plane off excess equally on each side. Allow1/16" clearance on each side.
3. Measure height of door along frame by using a scrap piece of lumber as a guide. Measure each side separately just in case there is any variation in height.
4.Transfer measure mark to each side of outside face of door and connect. Measure bevel of threshold with bevel square; mark angle on bottom edge.
5. Allowing for a 3/16" clearance in height of door, set door on its side and cut along base line to the angle of bevel. Cut from sides towards center.

INSTALLING PINE PANELS
- Baseboard must be surface-nailed. For a job of genuine professional quality, drive the 6d finishing nails well into the wood with nails set, then use filler to hide the holes.
- Nail paneling to the furring strips at the tongued edge. In this way, the groove of the next panel will hide the nails. Hammer the grooved block as shown to obtain a tight fit.
- Furring strips must be installed all around windows to give solid support for paneling. You must also cut panels to fit around windows.
- For flat corners, a strip of paneling is beveled on both edges. It is laid right into the corner and then surface nailed.
- For a 90ํํ corner, trim the pattern from a piece of paneling. But it into the corner against other end panel and nail.

SCREEN MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
- A small hole or break, large enough to admit insects, may be covered over with any quick-drying waterproof glue. It completely cover the hole with a film.
- Larger holes may be patched by using a quick-drying waterproof glue to attach a new section of screen material to the old. Extend patch 2" beyond torn spot.
- Loose corner joints can be tightened by drilling 3/8" hole, then driving in 3/8" dowel coated with glue. The dowel extends 2" into adjoining piece. Use slotted dowels.
- If ends of frame piece are rotted but frame is otherwise sound, cut of bad part at angle and splice on new piece, jointing with countersunk screws, and dowel at corner joint.
- To replace screen with new material, first lift trim strips covering tacks or staples. Lift with putty knife and work gently. These strips are brittle.
- If only half of screen is damaged, cut away bad portion at central brace, leaving good part intact. Screen can be cut away with heavy shears or tin snips.
- To provide necessary tension, tack screens down at center, then wrap end of roll around board, using board as lever to tighten screen for tacking.
- If you don't have stapling machine, use regular staples, staggering points across screen mesh to provide maximum holding strength.
- For full-length screen replacement, tack to one end, bow screen as shown, then tack at other end. This system provides proper tension.
- If screen are sound, go over them with wire brush to remove dirt and rust or corrosion. Brush both sides in all direction to do this job right.
- After brush treatment, clean wire with vacuum cleaner to pick up dust in preparation for paining. This assures maximum vision though screens.
- Apply shellac or varnish to wire screen ( plastic screening requires no paint) and let flow though joints along edges to seal against rain penetration.
- Sand off old paint, particularly along edges, or new coat will make screen wider and produce tight fit in frames. Forcing damages paint.
- Paint frames last.Use good-quality outside paint and be sure all wood is covered.
